The Internet can be a confusing thing. Not what’s on it, but how you access it. In my travels I continue to encounter folks who don’t understand the basics of Internet connectivity--namely, the differences between Wi-Fi and 3G.

Launch of the Caribbean Art Documentation Centre (formerly National Art Gallery Committee) at BCC Library

It's Friday, December 2, an overcast, chilly, wet morning.  Despite the inclement conditions the BCC Library hosted the opening of the Caribbean Art Documentation Centre to a warm and receptive audience graced by Ms Shirley Farnum, Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Family, Culture, Sports and Youth; Dr Gladstone Best, Principal, BCC; Chairperson of the National Art Gallery Committe (NAGC), Ms Alissandra Cummins; her deputy, Mrs Hartley Alleyne and committee members, Ms Allison Thompson and Mrs Andrea Wells.  Also present were students and staff of the College who were thrilled and appreciative of the influx of the new multi-media. 
The texts are a collection of art materials whose major focus is on Caribbean art and artists which will be housed by the Library on its mezzanine floor for use predominantly by the art community.

The reception then moved to Morningside where the Black Jacobins: Barbados Artists at the Caribbean Pavilion is currently displaying the work of Barbadian artists, Ras Akyem-i Ramsay, Ras Ishi Butcher and Ewan Atkinson.  The catalogue also highlighted the works of other provocative Caribbean artists, namely Christian Bertin and David Damoison of Martinique as well as John Beadle, Heino Schmid, Blue Curry, Lynn Parotti, and Lavar Munro from the Bahamas.

David A Bailey curated the show; Miss Shelly Mayers, designed the catalogue and invitations.  All are invited.

The Gathering - A Review

Yesterday students and staff were thrilled by the musical performances in the College Library for the Independence influenced theme, 'As Bajan as..."

The College Choir, under the direction of Mrs Burke (General & Continuing Education), performed creditably.  A favourite feature at graduations and other college events, the choir is made up of students and staff, but is always on the lookout for new members to swell its ranks.
 
Ms Faith Callender rendered the Cheryl Hackett song, "Beautiful and Unspoilt" and just like the name, her voice is similarly styled.  In her a capella version, Faith had the audience clapping and singing along and this segued into the afternoon's highlight performance by Sing Out Barbados!  This well known folk group has been gracing stages at home and abroad for many years (currently they are celebrating 40 years) so we were blessed to receive them.  Always spirited and engaging, the group performed medleys of our favourite local folk songs; their joyful rendition had the walls of the library "breaking down." 

Alas, the Gathering is over till next year, but as one first year student wondered, "Couldn't you do something this Christmas?"

The Gathering

Hello again.  On the 23rd November we will be hosting Sing Out Barbados, The College Choir and Ms Faith Callender who will be performing musically for us. 
Other acts are scheduled on this day as well.  All students have an opportunity to perform on Open Mic.  Come show off your talent at singing, drama, spoken word, craft, playing a musical instrument, fashion, even dance!!

Ms Hetty Stoute-Oni or Ms Carlyon Blackman or you could just inform the Officer on Duty at the Circulation Desk.).

Come join us in the College Library on Wednesday Nov 14th & 23rd 2011 from 12:00 p.m. - 1:00 p.m. to Refresh, Relax and Rejuvenate, as the College Librarian and staff invite you to this year's "Gathering"

Our display will be officially launched on November 14 and continues for the entire month of November.  On November 23 the 'main event' will be held in the Library's alternative learning space.
